IMF board member criticizes Fund’s Greece program

Brazil’s International Monetary Fund representative has criticized the tough reforms demanded of Greece, saying the Fund and its bailout partners appear to want to run the Greek economy themselves.

Paulo Nogueira Batista, who represents Brazil and 10 other countries at the global crisis lender, said in a May 30 statement to the board that Greece has already made substantial progress under harsh austerity conditions.

The statement, obtained by AFP after the board approved the release of new funds to Athens, said the IMF and its European partners should ease some of the conditions of their massive rescue program for the country.

«Fiscal adjustment has been very large and the return to a primary surplus in 2013 constituted an important milestone. It is hard to see how the country can do more on this front,» said Nogueira Batista.

He pointed out that Greece could only manage to ease its economic contraction last year by not meeting all the tough reforms the lenders demanded of it.

«This seems to indicate that the number of structural measures the Troika has been demanding from Greece is rather excessive.»

In the 81 pages of detailed policy demands of the newest stage of the IMF-European Commission-European Central Bank rescue program, he said Greece appears to be «a victim of German thoroughness».

Το Συνέδριο, το οποίο διοργανώθηκε από την International Herald Tribune και την εφημερίδα Καθημερινή, διεξήχθη στο Ξενοδοχείο Μεγάλη Βρετανία κατά το διήμερο 15-16 Οκτωβρίου 2012.

This sent global markets reeling because he could potentially unleash a series of events that would force Greece to leave the euro zone.

Not satisfied with the necks they sucked on the first time, the Greek vampire politicians are set to obtain extra funding to the tune of €10 million. Ο Χαρίλαος Τρικούπης και ο Θεόδωρος Δηληγιάννης

Στην ελληνική πολιτική σκηνή του τέλους του 19ου αιώνα, ο Θεόδωρος Δηληγιάννης, αρχηγός του τότε Εθνικού κόμματος, απόγονος κοτζαμπάσηδων και κλασικός εκπρόσωπος της πολιτικής φαυλότητας, αντιπολιτευόταν με πάθος το μεγάλο πολιτικό ηγέτη Χαρίλαο Τρικούπη. Όταν ο τελευταίος, ο οποίος το 1893 υποχρεώθηκε να πει το ιστορικό «δυστυχώς επτωχεύσαμεν», τον ρώτησε «τελικά, ποια είναι η δική σας πολιτική κύριε Δηληγιάννη», εκείνος του απάντησε : « Η πολιτική μου είναι ακριβώς η αντίθετη της ιδικής σας κύριε Τρικούπη»!

Upper Macedonia, Southern Vardarska, Gorna Makedonija, or Down Under Kosovo?

Much has been written lately about the future name of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Makedonija, to be settled with Greece. The former Yugoslav province left the collapsing Yugoslav union, in 1991 and declared independence, taking on the misnomer of Република Македонија, transliterated as Republika Makedonija.

The Greeks, whose northernmost province is the historic Μακεδονία/Macedonia, home of Aristotle and Alexander the Great among other greats of world history and culture, demanded that their new neighbors must choose a different name, not Macedonia. The former Yugoslav province, the Greeks argued, has no more than a small part (Pelagonia and part of Amphaxitis) of historic Macedonia proper in its land, mainly along its southern provinces.

Even accepting for a moment the Skopjan unhistorical definition of where Macedonia starts and ends, and wrongly for a moment assuming that all of FYROM’s land was part of Macedonia proper, FYROM still could not be called Macedonia. Even under that definition, it only constitutes a small part of the whole area of Macedonia proper, about 30%.

The small part (FYROM, and essentially only its extreme south) of the total (geographic Macedonia) should never have been encouraged to usurp a name that characterizes the geographic whole: the historically defined Macedonia. Yet this is precisely what G.W.Bush did the first day after his second
