Media Dictatorship in Greece

 

Al Jazeera’s feature on the Greek media in the video that follows, underlines the truth many have known in Greece for several years now. The fact that graffiti on walls says «switch off the TV» goes to show that Greeks no longer view news bulletins and journalists as objective.

The picture above was snapped during last year’s demonstrations at the end of May in Thessaloniki. It was one of many messages taped on columns outside the city’s symbol of pain and freedom, the White Tower, which translates to: «If TV said it, it’s probably a lie.»

Εκατό χρόνια κλείνουμε φέτος εμείς οι Θεσσαλονικείς από την απελευθέρωση της Νύφης του Θερμαϊκού. Μέσα σε αυτή τη χρονιά, δεν θα μπορούσε να λείπει και ένα κείμενο αφιέρωμα στον αθλητικό σύλλογο που συνέδεσε το όνομα του με την ιστορία της πόλης και του Ελληνικού πνεύματος στην Μακεδονία.

Το κείμενο που ακολουθεί γράφτηκε στα Αγγλικά με σκοπό να διαδώσει στο εξωτερικό την ιστορία και τα προβλήματα που εμφανίστηκαν – αν όχι δημιουργήθηκαν εσκεμμένα – εις βάρος μιας ομάδας ορόσημο για την Ελλάδα, ενός συλλόγου που δυστυχώς έπεσε και αυτό θύμα προδοσίας και χειραγώγησης. Γράφτηκε με την ελπίδα πως θα πέσει σε χέρια που θα το χρησιμοποιήσουν για να προωθήσουν τα συμφέροντα όχι μόνο ενός συλλόγου, αλλά της ίδιας της πόλης και χώρας που τόσα χρόνια εμπλούτισε με την παρουσία του στα αθλητικά δρώμενα και κατ’επέκταση τον πολιτισμό.

Καιρός να δούμε πίσω από το πέπλο. Ας θυμηθούμε τι ήταν ο Ηρακλής και τι πρόκειται να γίνει με τα οικόπεδα της Μίκρας που λέγεται εξανεμίζονται στο τέλος της φετινής χρονιάς έτσι και δεν ξεκινήσει η κατασκευή του γηπέδου.

Άραγε ποσο συνένοχοι είμαστε αν αφήσουμε άλλο ένα πολιτιστικό κομμάτι του τόπου να περάσει με συνοπτικές διαδικασίες στα αρχεία;

TEDxThessaloniki 2012: «Το Θάρρος να Δημιουργείς»

Η ομάδα του TEDxThessaloniki ανακοίνωσε το θέμα και την ημερομηνία του TEDxThessaloniki 2012 την Πέμπτη 9.02.2012 στο Dynamo project space. Εκεί βρέθηκαν, δημοσιογράφοι, εθελοντές και φίλοι του TEDxThessaloniki. Δείπνο απόρων στο φεστιβάλ γαστρονομίας!

«Δείπνο Απόρων» θα πραγματοποιείται από σήμερα και κάθε Τετάρτη του μήνα, στο πλαίσιο του «Φεστιβάλ Γαστρονομίας Θεσσαλονίκης«.

United We Stand…

United we stand, divided we fall – a statement we all have heard, read, uttered. No one can deny its common sense. No one can argue that its premise is false. More than ever this statement applies to the needs of Greece. Why? What begs the unification of the people in Greece today? What is the core issue in Greece today? The failing economy is the apparent answer. The lack of sovereignty is also key. However, the core issue is that Greece is travelling on a road of severe impoverishment at lightening speed. At the end of the road a third world country awaits. The lack of sovereignty is the vehicle that carries Greece to the final destination. And the failing economy fuels this vehicle.

Taxi owners to strike on Thursday

Taxi owners’ unions will hold a General Assembly in central Athens on Thursday to discuss the new status quo that will arise from the provisions of the bill and to take decisions on further action.

The strike initially affects Athens and Thessaloniki, but local taxi owners’ unions from other parts of the country are also expected to state participation in the action.

The bill, unveiled during Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting by Transport Minister Yiannis Ragoussis, provides for a return to exclusive state authority of the issue of taxi permits, the introduction of special nine-seat taxis and motorcycle-taxis, a hefty fee for acquiring a new taxi licence and a reduction of taxi fares by 10-20 percent.

A walk around Thessaloniki’s White Tower, the city’s symbol of freedom and one of the central meeting points where citizens gather to rejoice national or local successes has turned into a hub of restlessness. The cries of joy from a far-away victory in the European Football Championship under huge screens set up along the waterfront under the imposing presence of this historic tower in 2004 have turned into enraged cries, pleas for help, threats against treacherous politicians.

‘Indignants’ gather in Syntagma for European-wide protest

In greater numbers than on any night since the protests began earlier this week, the ‘Indigants’ kept the date made via Facebook and other social networking sites on Sunday, descending upon Syntagma Square for yet another sit-down demonstration against severe austerity cuts. This night they were joined by protesters in Milan’s Piazza del Duomo, Champs Elysee in Paris and another 100 cities of Europe that held simultaneous peaceful demonstrations.
