Diaspora speaks on Conference on Cyprus

On the eve of the Conference on Cyprus, we feel compelled to express our views on the Cyprus negotiations on behalf of the Hellenic American Leadership Council (HALC), the International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA), the Federation of Cypriot American Organizations (FCAO), the American Hellenic Institute (AHI), the American Hellenic Council (AHC), the Hellenic Federation of New Jersey, and the Coordinated Effort of Hellenes (CEH). Our community has worked with successive U.S. Administrations on behalf of a workable and lasting solution on Cyprus. In 2004, when we warned that the flawed Annan Plan was headed in the wrong direction, some officials defamed us as “rejectionists”, “hard liners”, or as “not having a bottom line.” Yet history proved us right and the officials predicting a landslide victory in 2004 wrong. At this key moment in Cyprus’ history, we have decided that it is time for us to speak out, warn against false steps, and describe an agreement that we may be able to support.

We have not only advocated for an end to the Turkish occupation of Cyprus, but for a Συνέχεια

1. Might Greek-Israeli ties, as some think, be a marriage of convenience until Israel-Turkey relations improve?

Greek Israeli ties could evolve in view of several developments, including the deterioration of Turkish-Israeli relations. The Eastern Mediterranean has seen strategic developments which may give Israel and Greece reasons to enhance their strategic relationship, as a way to reposition the various equations of balance of power in the region. Under the AKP Government in Ankara, Turkey has practically severed its military alliance with Israel, and at the same time signed a strategic cooperation treaty with Syria even though it criticized Assad since the uprising started few months ago. The AKP Government is reaching out to Hamas, even though indirectly, and is enhancing its outreach to the Iranian regime.

03.06.2011: THE DIRECTION OF TURKEY’ S FOREIGN POLICY & STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

THE DIRECTION OF TURKEY’ S FOREIGN POLICY & STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

Written by Michael Rubin *

For much of his first term in office, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan pursued a balancing act: He sought to reinvigorate ties to the Islamic world while, committing simultaneously committing Turkey to the European Union accession process. After winning reelection in 2007, however, Erdoğan veered Turkish foreign policy further toward the Islamic world.

Turkey’s European ambitions fell by the wayside, into the realm of lip service only. Turkey’s September 2010 referendum marked another milestone. While the poll centered on constitutional reform, the size of Erdoğan’s victory imbued him with new confidence. In its wake, he has cast aside any pretense of compromise and balance. No longer does Erdoğan even pretend to look West; Erdoğan now guides Turkey to the East.
